What the certification is made of

Three parts, in this order

Students seated in a classroom during a dive theory session
Part one

Knowledge development

The theory, done online as PADI eLearning before you get in the water, at whatever pace suits you.

Two students in scuba gear smiling in the pool during a confined water session
Part two

Confined water dives

Practicing each skill somewhere calm and shallow with an instructor beside you, until it is second nature.

Four scuba divers in full gear hovering together in mid-water
Part three

Open water dives

Putting it together on real dives, which is where the certification is earned.

Never dived at all?

Start with Discover Scuba Diving — a short supervised session in confined water with no certification attached. Everything you practice there carries straight into this course.

Want to know what the dives are like?

Read the open water dive information for what to expect on your certification dives, or ask an instructor — working out which package you need takes about a minute.
