Twelve hours after a single dive. Eighteen after two or more. Those are the published guidelines, they are minimums rather than targets, and the difference between them is the part most divers get wrong.

Why altitude matters at all
A dive leaves you with more dissolved nitrogen than you started with, and your body offloads it slowly at the surface over hours.
An aircraft cabin is not at sea level pressure. Climbing to cabin altitude reduces the pressure around you further and faster than surfacing did, which can bring dissolved gas out of solution — the same mechanism as decompression sickness from the dive itself.
So the waiting is not superstition. It is giving your body time to offload before you reduce the pressure again.
The guidelines

These come from Divers Alert Network, and they distinguish between kinds of diving rather than giving one number.

The word doing the work in that table is minimum. DAN is explicit that these reduce the risk of decompression sickness rather than remove it, and that a longer interval reduces it further. The full guidance is on their guidelines page.
Twelve and eighteen are floors, not targets. Nobody has ever regretted waiting longer.
Where the numbers come from

It is worth knowing that these are not committee guesses, because that is what makes them worth following over whatever a forum tells you.
DAN funded trials at the Duke University Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology, run from 1992 to 1999. Dry, resting volunteers dived nine single and repetitive profiles near the recreational no-decompression limits, then sat through four-hour simulated flights at a cabin altitude of 8,000 feet.
- For single no-stop dives to 60 feet or deeper, no decompression sickness occurred at surface intervals of 11 hours or longer.
- For repetitive no-stop dives, decompression sickness did occur at surface intervals shorter than 17 hours.
The published guidelines sit just above those findings, which is why they are 12 and 18 rather than 11 and 17.
What this means for planning a trip

The practical consequence is simple and it catches people out every season: your last day of diving is constrained by your flight, not the other way round.
- Count backwards from the flight. An 8am departure means out of the water by 2pm two days earlier if you have been diving repetitively.
- Assume 18 hours, not 12. Almost nobody on a dive trip does a single dive and stops.
- Do not plan a dive for the last morning. It is the most common way people end up flying too soon.
- Build in a buffer for delays. A delayed flight is fine; an earlier one rebooked at the desk is not.
- Use the last day for something else. It is not a wasted day, and it is the one you will remember if it goes wrong.
It changes how you plan the diving itself
The guideline is not only a departure-day problem. It quietly shapes what kind of diving is sensible at the end of a trip.
A deep dive on your second-to-last day is a different proposition from a shallow one, because the nitrogen load is what you are waiting to shed. If you are planning anything past 60 feet late in a trip, that is worth thinking about alongside the depth your certification allows in the first place.
Enriched air changes the arithmetic in your favor on bottom time but does not shorten the surface interval before flying — the guidelines are written for the dives, not the gas. Our comparison of nitrox and air covers what it does and does not buy you.

Computers, apps and conflicting numbers

Your dive computer probably has a no-fly timer, and it may clear you before 18 hours have passed. That is where most of the confusion comes from.
Computer timers are manufacturer algorithms and they are not all the same. The DAN figures come from published trials. When the two disagree, take the longer of them — there is no cost to waiting and no way to undo flying too soon.
The same logic applies to whatever a resort or an operator tells you. They may be right, but the guideline is published and free to check.
One more thing that trips people up: the guideline applies to the last dive, not the last diving day. A single shallow dive on an otherwise dry afternoon does not reset you back to the 12-hour column if you have been diving repetitively all week. Your nitrogen loading is cumulative, and the 18-hour figure exists precisely because of that.
The same applies to a check-out or refresher dive squeezed in before traveling home. It counts, however brief and however shallow, and it starts the clock again.
If something goes wrong
Decompression sickness after a flight is uncommon and it is not something to wait out.
Symptoms can be vague — unusual fatigue, joint pain, tingling, weakness — and they can appear hours after landing. If you have any of that after diving and flying, seek emergency medical care and contact the DAN emergency hotline. A dive shop is not the right place to have symptoms assessed, and we will tell you the same thing if you call.
Prevention is the whole game here, and prevention is just arithmetic done in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Is it 12 hours or 24?
Neither number is a rule of thumb someone invented. DAN publishes 12 hours as a minimum after a single no-decompression dive and 18 hours after repetitive or multi-day diving. Twenty-four is a common personal margin rather than the published guideline.
Does the guideline count from the start or the end of the dive?
From when you surface from your last dive. The surface interval is the time out of the water before the aircraft leaves the ground.
What about driving over a mountain pass?
It is the same problem — reduced pressure at altitude — and the guidelines are written for flying rather than for driving. If your route climbs significantly, treat it seriously and ask DAN rather than guessing.
My computer clears me sooner than 18 hours. Who is right?
Treat whichever is longer as the answer. Computer no-fly timers are manufacturer algorithms and they differ; the DAN guidelines come from published trials. There is no penalty for waiting longer.
What if I have symptoms after flying?
Seek emergency medical care, and contact the DAN emergency hotline. Do not wait to see whether it passes, and do not ask a dive shop to assess symptoms — that is not something we are qualified to do.
